Las Trampas Day Hike

I'm going to be honest, folks.  It was rough.  I guess the chocolates and cookies and lack of physical activity have really taken their toll this holiday season.  But, I powered through and we completed our first hike of the 52 Hike Challenge: Las Trampas!  Check out this view!

We are fortunate enough to live in Northern California where there are beautiful trails around every corner.  Still, instead of being adventurous and choosing something new, we went with the safe bet and chose a hike we had already done before.  1) It's not far from where we live; 2) Loki is welcome.; 3) We were fairly confident it wouldn't kill us.
My husband, David, with Loki
Las Trampas Regional Wilderness is situated on 5,342 acres of land in the San Francisco East Bay.  There are several different trailheads to choose from, but we went with Elderberry which is located in San Ramon.  The whole hike took us around 3 hours (~4.72 miles) going from Elderberry to Rocky Ridge View to Cuestra and back down Rocky Ridge View, but depending on which trails you choose it could take much longer especially if you opt to hike all the way to Alamo.
I was testing out the new hiking poles we received for Christmas.
Thanks, Brian! They work great!

Besides the stunning views and quad workout, you just may get to hang out with some interesting animals.  Of course people bring their dogs and the trails are designed for horseback riders as well, but you may also run into the grazing cattle on your nature walk.  The last time we were here, we had to carefully navigate through about twenty cows to reach the bottom of the hill!
Is this not the cutest thing you've ever seen?
This is what happens when Loki's water bowl doesn't make it into his backpack.

There are many, many steep hills at Las Trampas.
No trouble, I'm sure, for anyone in half decent shape.
Me, on the other hand...

Beautifully captured moment with me and Loki.
The reality of this situation is Loki is urging me not to take so many breaks!

And, hey, just for fun... Here are a few pictures from the last time we hiked Las Trampas which was just after we moved to California in April 2015.  Enjoy!

Loki loves to survey the lands below...

Besides hill after hill after hill, Las Trampas does have
these lovely, little mossy glades.

In April, though a perfectly sunny day at the trailhead,
the fog clung to the tops of the hills.
There were places where we could not see
more than a few feet in front of us.

Here are some of those cows I was talking about...

My lifelong hiking partner. Wouldn't have it any other way!
