Week 8: The Grass is Always Greener...

Sorry I am a little late in posting this...

My intent last week was to visit the local farmer's market and do a shot of wheatgrass because I remembered seeing a wheatgrass stand there a few years back and I have always wanted to try it.

So... apparently they don't have that stand anymore. 

Epic.  Fail.

That was my only plan for something new for the week, and I had already waited until Saturday because that is the day of the farmer's market. 

No need to panic though.

I am at the farmer's market, I think to myself (and verbalize aloud to my poor husband whom I have dragged along).  Surely I can find something new here.

We walk up and down the rows, peering into stand after stand of vegetables and crafts, passing several aspiring young artists singing for their supper as well as an older gentleman who just seems to be making a ruckus.  We end up buying some jalapenos and banana peppers and a few ears of sweet corn for my mom, but that's was not why we are here.  We need to find something, anything for me to try.

And then we see a foodtruck.

Of course my husband is starving by this point so we immediately sidle up to the window to place our orders.  He orders an egg sandwich because he quite obsessively loves breakfast food, and I want a hotdog because we do not buy hotdogs ever (despite my best efforts) and I have frankly (pun intended) missed that lovable mystery meat.

But wait!

The sign says that these are no ordinary hotdogs.  The meat comes from a vendor a few stalls down at this very farmer's market.  This farm prides itself on its grass-fed, non-chemically-altered, honest-to-goodness natural meat.

Naturally, I am suspicious of this natural meat. 

My delicate palate has grown accustomed to its daily allotment of hormone-ridden, chemically-saturated food.  Despite adding chia seeds to my diet recently, I have still not entirely curbed the junk-intake and still visit McDonald's and Burger King more often that I care to admit.

But I need something new and eating this grass-fed meat means that I can keep the same blog title that I already cleverly came up with for the imaginary wheatgrass shot.

So I order the hotdog--if you can still call it that.  It is much more like a sausage than a hotdog, but I eat it anyway.  It's honestly not terrible, but it certainly tastes nothing like a hotdog.  I don't know that I would order another one, but I managed to make it work--for the sake of the blog.

At least I didn't cop out and skip a week.

I am proud of myself for that.

I do have an update on the silent auction that I volunteered to help with.  Today, I met with the volunteer coordinator for the first time since the volunteer luncheon last Saturday was cancelled.  Turns out, they already have enough people helping with the silent auction so they would like to use my efforts elsewhere.  Of course I am more than happy to help still.  I took a tour of the facility and she gave me some background on the organization.  There is a more official volunteer orientation next Thursday which will hopefully have more specific information on what exactly I would be doing for them.  I'm still excited to be getting involved AND I may have found other new thing to blog about while I was there.  To be continued...

  2. Thanks for sharing Crystal! That's a beautifully written piece. I take it that was probably my "older gentleman who just seems to be making a ruckus"? One of the many reasons I love the farmer's market! You never know what you'll see there.
